Regenerative NTN architecture moves the 5G base station function into the satellite itself. Rather than bending signals back to ground for processing, the payload handles Layer 1 and above onboard — enabling lower latency, reduced ground infrastructure dependency, and greater network resilience. It is also one of the most demanding environments any physical layer IP will ever encounter.

Onboard processing places every constraint of a satellite payload — power, thermal, radiation, mass — directly onto the PHY. Software-based Layer 1 implementations cannot deliver the throughput and efficiency that commercial regenerative constellations require within those constraints.
